Motivational Interviewing describes an organized way of helping people to recognize their problems and to do something about them. Principally it addresses behavior about which the client has mixed feelings: drinking and substance misuse for example, but a surprising array of common mental and physical health problems as well. Issues from taking psychoactive medication through to eating more healthily can all be addressed using motivational interviewing.
This course is based on the latest edition of Miller and Rollnick's book so covers the four broad components of skill, namely: Knowledge and Spirit, Engaging, Focusing and Evoking, and Planning and Integration. In addition it looks at the relationship between Motivational Interviewing and The Stages of Change (the work of DiClemente et al). And finally it covers how to develop your Motivational Interviewing skills and practice after the course.

- Identify signs that a person is showing readiness to change.
- Demonstrate how to establish “Decisional Balance” with a person to highlight the pros and cons of changing.
- Explain why it is important to boost a person’s self-efficacy.
- Discuss why it is important to strengthen a person’s commitment to their plan for change, and how.

Requirements for completion: To be awarded CE credits for this course 100% attendance is required for live training. For the 'online anytime' (self-paced) version, you are required to complete the course in full and complete a multiple choice exam whereby a pass marks of 85% is required (failure on the third attempt would result in having to go back through the content again). A feedback survey is also required to be completed.
Note: there may be other professional licensing boards that accept CE credits earned from APA-approved sponsors. Because CE regulations vary by state and profession, we recommend that participants check with their state licensing board to inquire whether credits will be accepted for renewal of licensure.
